Maritime Museum Must-Visit Destination
THE NORTH CAROLINA
Maritime Museum has been mentioned as a must-visit destination by
travel writer Patricia Schultz in her new book – “1,000 Places to
See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before You Die.” Schultz also
wrote “1,000 Places to See Before You Die,” one of the best selling
travel books ever published, and the basis of the new reality
television show of the same name on “The Travel Channel.”
Admission to the
Museum is free. Visitors experience coastal plant and animal life,
the history of the U.S. Lifesaving Service, whaling on the North
Carolina coast, piracy, full-sized watercraft and models from
sailing skiffs to commercial boats, plus much more. Artifacts from
the vessel believed to be Blackbeard’s flagship, the Queen Anne’s
Revenge, are on permanent display at the museum, raised from the
nearby shipwreck.
Across the street
from the main museum, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center houses a
working boat shop and model shop where visitors can watch the
restoration and construction of wooden boats.
The museum is open
weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
Sundays from 1-5 p.m. For more information about the N.C. Maritime
Museum, call (252) 728-7317 or go to www.ncmaritimemuseum.org.
The North Carolina
Museum is part of the Division of State History Museums, Office of
Archives and History, an agency of the N.C. Department of Cultural
Resources.
